EKPA Show Rules, Regulations & Scorecard
Updated September 2021
GeneraL
All animals entered in the show are required to be 100% Kunekune and AKKPS and/or AKPR Registered. Registration Number must be provided for each entry and will be validated by EKPA/KPPA administrators.
Exceptions: Weanling Class and Pen of Pork Class - a litter notification with the animal’s herdbook number will be accepted.
Exhibitors must be 9 years or older to participate in general and production classes.
Unless otherwise stated, the pig must be owned by the exhibitor (or family member) listed on the exhibitor registration form, and the owner's name should match on registration.
No logos, banners, or signage of any kind is allowed in the videos and photos submitted into the show. Violation of this rule will result in disqualification from class.
No video editing of any kind is allowed. Violation of this rule will result in disqualification from class.
Videos are to be 30-60 seconds. Longer videos may be disqualified. By uploading content to any EKPA Show, you are agreeing to allow EKPA/KPPA to utilize that content for publicity, marketing and educational purposes.
Three or more animals must be entered in a class. If less than 3 are entered, the age group will be combined with another to form a larger class. The EKPA Committee reserves the right to make the necessary changes.
No refunds are given once your class entries are paid.
Judges decisions are final. Judges’ scores and comments will be provided to each exhibitor following the conclusion of the show.
BREED Class REGULATIONS
All animals must have a minimum of 10 evenly spaced working teats to qualify for a class. Inverted, blunt or pin teats are not considered functional.
Must not have hernia or rupture – both scrotal and abdominal.
Must not have cryptorchidism
Must not have hermaphroditism
Must have no evidence of an extra dewclaw
A boar must not have a physical defect that would hinder his ability to effectively reproduce.
Wattled and unwattled registered pigs are acceptable.
Market Class REGULATIONS
All animals must comply with the following rules:
Males must be barrows
Femals must be gilts (non producing females or breed stock that have yet to produce)
SHOW TOOLS
These new rules are for breeding and market classes only. These rules DO NOT apply to showmanship:
A producer can show/drive their pig with a livestock stick, hog bat, or pig whip.
A producer can show/move their pig with a hog board. (Please remember to choose a color of board that your pig will stand out with. Ex. You probably do not want to use a black hog board to move around a pig with any black color to it)
A producer can show their pig by leading. This should be done providing the least bit of distraction on camera and not encourage an unnatural head carriage. Camera person shall strive to not “capture” the leading on camera. You can only lead with a hassled pig whip that the pig is following or a stick with a small stick. NO leading with feed pans, feed buckets, or feed scoops.
Scorecard & judges comments
Judges are given the opportunity to evaluate animals utilizing the EKPA Unified Score Card . If they choose not to do so, judges will then choose to give adequate verbal feedback on videos. This choice is at the judge’s discretion.
Pigs are scored on a point scale of 100, and evaluated in 3 main categories: GENERAL APPEARANCE, BREED CHARACTERISTICS, and GENDER CHARACTERISTICS.
Unwattled pigs ARE permitted (and encouraged!) to show. In the EKPA Unified Score Card, wattles are awarded 2 BONUS points. (So, unwattled pigs do not receive this bonus), thus, a ‘perfect’ pig could receive a score of 102, and an unwattled pig can receive a score of 100.
Video Requirements for General Classes
Each entry will require a 30-60 second video of the pig(s).
Exhibitors will only be shown from the waist down. Video should be taken at pig’s height to show your pigs at their best. No logos, banners or other signage indicating farm identity should be visible in videos. The video must capture the Kunekune walking toward, away from, and a profile of both sides. Pig must be kept moving throughout the video.
Video Requirements for YOUTH Showmanship Classes
Each entry will require a 60-90-second video demonstrating the youth’s ability to handle the pig. Youth should wear appropriate and neat attire. This video should include the full body of the youth and the pig together.
Attire
Exhibitors should wear darker pants/jeans and a shirt free from any logos, farm name or branding of any kind. A lighter colored button down solid color shirt or nice polo is recommended. Clothes should be neat and clean. Proper footwear is required, a leather shoe/boot is recommended (no crocs, sandals, etc). If a mud boot is worn, pants should be pulled down over the boot to disguise that a mud boot is being worn.
AKKPS SANCTIONING RULES
AKKPS members will receive and enjoy a discounted price off of the published non-member rate for entries.
AKKPS encourages members to join EKPA to take advantage of the educational material offered to EKPA members through EKPA membership.
EKPA shows will not be solely AKKPS sanctioned. EKPA does accept entries from registered stock from other KuneKune registries and those other registries could also sanction EKPA shows as well
AKKPS Registered Stock will have the show titles awarded from EKPA shows that AKKPS sanctions reflected in the AKKPS herd book. This pertains to KuneKunes that are registered to the current AKKPS member and the current AKKPS member is the one entering the pig in the EKPA show using an AKKPS Pedigree.
AKKPS will accept a litter notification number on AKKPS pigs that are under one year of age. The show title will not be awarded until the pig is fully registered with AKKPS.
KuneKunes in the AKKPS herd book / pedigree of a KuneKune but not registered with AKKPS at the time of the show will not have awarded titles reflected in the herd book.
EKPA shows are solely put on by EKPA using the rules set forth by EKPA
AKKPS reserves the right to request verification in the form of a picture of the KuneKune with the ID method shown in the same picture (ear tag, scanner or tattoo) that is on the AKKPS registration prior to an awarded title being entered into the herd-book.
